How is the interest paid out?

  • Interest is credited monthly to your preferred SBM transactional or savings account.
  • The principal remains invested until maturity, ensuring steady income during the term.

What happens when the FD matures?

Upon maturity, you may:

  • Renew the fixed deposit for a new term.
  • Withdraw both the principal and any remaining interest into your SBM account.

Can I withdraw funds before maturity?

Yes, but:

  • Early withdrawal is subject to terms and approval by your branch manager.
  • It is typically only allowed in emergency cases.
  • No penalties may apply if approved under such
    circumstances.

Can I get a loan or overdraft against my deposit?

Yes.

  • You may access an Overdraft (OD) facility against your fixed deposit.
  • The OD is offered at a markup of 2–3% above your deposit rate.
  • It provides convenient access to funds without breaking your FD.

Does the interest earned attract tax?

Yes.
A 15% withholding tax applies to the interest earned, in line with Kenyan tax regulations.

What documents do I need to open the account?

You will need to provide:

  • A completed account opening form.
  • National ID/Passport/Alien ID (original and copy).
  • Two passport-size photos (colored).
  • Your KRA PIN.
  • Next of kin details.
  • A utility bill or similar document as proof of residence.
  • Proof of source of funds.
  • Foreign nationals must also submit a visa, work permit, or alien certificate.
  • FATCA/CRS forms for Kenyans abroad and foreign nationals.
