SBM Group Chairman Kee Chong Li Kwong Wing has been elected as Chairman of the UnionPay Africa Regional Council. Mr. Li Kwong Wing’s appointment was based by his experience in cross-border financial services and his initiative in building sustainable partnerships within Africa’s financial sector.
The UnionPay Africa Regional Council will steer the organization’s operations on the continent with African countries keen on investing in the development of E-commerce and the widescale adoption of online payments. The card provider’s services are currently accepted in over 174 countries, including 48 African countries.
“Together with UnionPay, I will share my experience and knowledge of the African market for the betterment of the continent. We intend to launch several initiatives such as UnionPay Online Payment which is a secure payment platform, the UnionPay Mobile Quickpass which is an alternative contactless payment service allowing cardholders to add their UnionPay cards to their mobile phones to make payments. In addition, there will also be innovative products such as UnionPay QR Code Payment and UnionPay E-Wallet.” Mr. Li Kwong Wing said
UnionPay has the largest base of cardholders in the world having issued over 7.59 billion cards. The card provider has forged partnerships with over 2000 institutions across the globe and an online merchant base of over 10 million merchants.
Kee Chong Li Kwong Wing Profile
Mr Kee Chong LI KWONG WING is an economist who graduated from the London School of Economics. He was elected as a Director on the Board of Directors of SBM Holdings Ltd in February 2015 and was designated as Chairman by the Board of Directors of SBM Holdings Ltd in June 2015.
He is the founder of the Mauritius International Trust Co. Ltd, one of the first professional firms licensed to provide financial services to international private and institutional clients. During his career, he has served as Advisor to the Minister of Finance in fiscal and monetary matters.
He set up the first Mutual Fund in Mauritius, which was also the first Fund authorised by Government to make investments in global markets. He also launched the first Property Unit Trust of Mauritius and has served as the Chairman of the Stock Exchange Commission (the predecessor of the Financial Services Commission), the State Investment Corporation Management Ltd and the National Advisory Council on Prices and Consumer Protection.
Mr Kee Chong Li Kwong Wing, G.O.S.K. was also Consultant to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the U.N. Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the Finance and Investment Sector Coordinating Unit (FISCU) of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Council of Finance Ministers.
He served as a Member of Parliament between 2010-2014, responsible for Finance and Economic Matters on the Opposition bench.
